IBM z Systems™ introduces a new connectivity protocol Shared Memory Communications – Direct Memory Access (SMC-D) for IBM z13s™ (z13s) and IBM z13™ (z13); designed to provide application transparent highly optimized communications within the server. SMC-D offers up to 91% improvement in throughput; up to 47% reduction in networking related CPU cost and up to 48% improvement in response time for request/response workloads and up to 61% CPU savings for file transfers ‘within-the-box’ versus standard TCP/IP over HiperSockets. Support for SMC-D will be available on z/OS V2R2 (via PTFs).
Best of all there are no application changes needed and the use of SMC-D is totally transparent to applications. And there's no new network adapters or network equipment required to exploit the function. Come and hear how this technology can be easily enabled to allow transparent exploitation for z/OS TCP socket applications. Use cases covered will include exploiting SMC-D for communications that are currently using TCP/IP over OSA Express and also over HiperSockets. This session will discuss the SMC-D protocol; basic benefits; and requirements to help you get started with this exciting new technology.
