Purpose

This Committee operates semi-independently from the MVSE project and is responsible for document printing and presentation items relating to Enterprise Presentation Solutions on all platforms. This covers education on data format, presentation, and management of formatted information on a variety of devices. For example, the committee sponsors sessions describing the use of tools to format information, such as utility bills, for printing and display.

The Enterprise Presentation Solutions Committee endevors to schedule sessions of interest to SHARE attendees. The sessions cover the full scope of Enterprise Presentation Solution's interest and range from introductory and tutorial to detailed technical sessions. Some common session topics are:

  • Tools for authoring and inputting presentation data
  • The enterprise-wide management of presentation data
  • The enterprise-wide processing and distribution of presentation data
  • Presenting (e.g. printing or displaying) formatted information
  • Architectures for presentation and interchange
  • Composing, distributing, and presenting documents on a variety of devices.
  • User experiences with various presentation devices and their supporting software
  • Vendor presentations of hardware, software, and services which play a role in developing an Information Presentation Strategy.
  • Presentation related topics such as architectures, pre- and post-processing, operations, and developing presentation strategies.
  • Formulation and discussion of requirements against relevant products from IBM and its subsidiaries.

Philosophy

We advocate the use of architected solutions to form a presentation strategy. Our topics are of interest to the systems programmer, text programmer, document designer, presentation strategy planner, and the wide range of positions in-between. We strive to provide a mix of sessions that will accommodate our membership's varied interests.

Historical Perspective

Going back to our roots, first SHARE had the Document Composition Project (DOCC) and the Documentation Project (DOCU). The Document Composition and Advanced Function Printing Project was formed following SHARE 63 by merging the Document Composition Project (DOCC) and the Documentation Project (DOCU) together. Later the documentation portion was moved to the Training and Education (TRED) Project within the Management Division at SHARE 68.5. Next, the Enterprise Presentation Solutions Project was formed, which was a rechartered form of the Document Composition and Advanced Function Printing Project, following SHARE 79 and established following SHARE 80. Then the Enterprise Presentation Solutions Project became a Committee of the JES3 Project and was announced at SHARE 91 in Washington, DC. Following SHARE 112, the Enterprise Presentation Solutions Committee was moved under the MVSE Project.

We keep adapting to the changing environment, technology, and interests of our project members as reflected in our new name, charter, and description. While printing, specifically Advanced Function Printing, is still an important part of our curriculum, the enterprises represented by our membership are looking for non-print alternatives for the presentation of their formatted information. These same enterprises are also looking for enterprise-wide approaches to the presentation of their formatted information in an open systems environment.

Activities

The EPS committee acts as a focal point for requirements against the relevant presentation software and hardware products marketed by IBM and its subsidiaries. We encourage you to visit the SHARE Requirements page, login with your SHARE userid, and request membership in the EPS--JES3: EPS Area of Interest. If you are involved in enterprise presentation solutions with your company, get involved with shaping the technology here.

Work Products

  • EPS once produced a newsletter
  • EPS maintains a mailing list

Organization

The EPS Committee consists of active SHARE member volunteers, taking a formal position as a Deputy Project Manager or Project Officer with the MVSE Core Technologies Project. We are thankful for the support we get from our IBM Representative and Vendors, too. Our team works with the entire MVSE Core Technologies Project as needed. The committee handles EPS requirements and responsible for providing the MVSE Project Manager with session suggestions for future SHARE Conference events. Being an advocate for EPS related sessions, helping to prioritize, and working with the entire team are just a few of the responsibilities of the EPS Committee team.

Friends of EPS

EPS friends are SHARE members who have an interest in presentation strategies and the presentation of formatted information. An EPS friend remains on our mailing list by continuing attendance at EPS sessions or by responding to our requirements voting.
