Philosophy

We do that by sponsoring sessions presented by users, IBM personnel, and industry experts; fostering a strong working relationship between IBM development teams and SHARE members; coordinating SHARE Conference session content with other projects so that members maximize their SHARE Conference experience; gathering, prioritizing, and forwarding SHARE member requirements to IBM; increasing the ability of members to effectively use database software on all supported platforms; communicating member's tactical and strategic concerns to both SHARE and IBM; and influencing IBM in improving current products and defining future products.

Historical Perspective

Today:
The Database Project is under the Information Management Program of SHARE. We are adapting to the changing environment, technology and interests of our project members as reflected in our new name, charter, and description.

1983:
Looking back in time through the various sources, we find IBM DB2 on MVS was first Generally Available in 1983. The SHARE conferences that year were SHARE 60 in San Francisco, February 1983 and SHARE 61 in New York, August, 1983. Our search in records and people's memories continues as we seek the birthdate of the DB2 Project.

1994:
By SHARE 83 in Boston, August 1994, the DB2 Project under the DATA Program was well underway. Reviewing grids for SHARE 85 shows the DB2 Project was hosting sessions for DB2 on MVS/ESA, AIX and RS/6000 desktop systems. We also hosted sessions on Informix, Oracle and Sybase! SHARE 86 in Anaheim had begun a shift towards DB2 on the mainframe, both OS/390 and VM and ancilliary products like QMF.

1998:
By SHARE 90 in Anaheim, February 1998 there was a definite change as the grid shows all DB2 on OS/390 sessions. Over the years there were sessions on Peoplesoft, SAP, Siebel, and new features and tools.

2008:
The restructuring in SHARE brought the DB2 Project under the Architecture Program.

2009:
The restructuring in SHARE transformed the DB2 Project into the new Database Project and a new charter beginning at SHARE 113 in Denver, August 2009. That brings us back to where we are today.
