Knowledge Is The Treasure! And SHARE IS good at providing it * AS ALWAYS * since 1955 !!!.

Hello again after a long break! I try not to take that so long break in future!.:)

SHARE in San Francisco was wonderful!.I hope all of you had a chance to attend and enjoy the conference.

Our project had full of great sessions like all other projects. We had Performance Hot Topics* WONDERFUL session*, Configuring LPARs for Performance by Kathy Walsh, RMF latest & greatest,WLM latest & greatest - new features related to z/OS 2.1, Gary King's and John Burg's very useful sessions about new zEC12,CF as well as SMF113  measurements, Z/OS Performance Update by Marianne Hammer and many more user/experience sessions ,as an example zEC12 Flash Express & zAWARE Features by Mary Astley...If you could not attend, I strongly recommend you to check our SHARE website, download documents and have a look at them. They were ALL full of nice information....There might be times that you say, when you attend a session or read session documents,- 'WOW,there is so much information even in this JUST one slide' - I am pretty sure most attendances said that in several sessions. Believe me, when I first came across with one of the SHARE presentations many years ago, -I did not have a chance to attend during those years- I was so happy that I felt like I have found a Treasure. Information that I cannot find in any book, paper etc...

As usual hot topics were GREAT! https://share.confex.com/share/120/webprogram/Session12908.html. One session was verrry attractive for me. (LPAR design and dispatcher/hypervisor subjects are always my favorite). Kathy Walsh's Configuring LPARs for Performance session. That was full of both 'WSC experiences' as well as hints and tips...https://share.confex.com/share/120/webprogram/Session13101.html It was the time that I had experienced z9 to z10 migration, I started learning more details about LPAR performance management, IRD, hiperdispatch, Softcapping, hardcapping. It was soo fun to work on those and learn internals in addition how this great platform is behaving.

This session made me think about sharing information for those of you who are interested in using utilities etc. I had a chance to talk about it during some of my sessions too... Several years ago, I came accoss with this very! useful excel document, created by my friend Alain Maneville - IBM France. By using this excel, which is now much more than an excel spreadsheet, you can actually see how hiperdispatch calculates number of High LPs,medium & low LPs and for medium/low their weights according to your LPAR configuration. It has much more information... It is amazing to see how the weight change in LPAR effects those numbers. He used to have an email list, actually it started with this method and now I learned that you can actually download it from WLM Download website. Here is the link http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/os/zos/features/wlm/tools/WLMsetupdesigntools.html

And here are some notes I like to mention....

If you have not use zPCR yet, just try it to see the effect of your definitions -weight,LCP numbers, etc to your throughput. It is strongly recommended by IBM to be used in each CEC upgrade process, but in addition to that I have found it personally so useful during everyday studies.

Please send your SMF113 records to IBM if you have upgraded to new zEC12.IBM is looking for more data...

zEC12 is FULL of features & items related to performance... It makes me proud of my mainframe platform and being a part of it!...If I have had a chance to choose platform after graduated from computer engineering department,I would have choosen AGAIN working on MVS platform...

GOOGLE!  just  SHARE and any subject you are interested in , you WILL find out LOTS of information....I was actually aware of SHARE by this method many years ago and it is still the first thing I do when I do research. Check WSC website, check redbooks, redpapers,APARS go on...

Do you have any methods, programs that you use and you think very useful for you ? Just SHARE with us so that we can SHARE it with all of you!.

Check my friends' blogs as well -  Mary Anne & Marna !. I enjoy reading their blogs alot!.

Stay tuned, enjoy information that we got from SHARE conferences and till next time...
