What happens if you offer college students an opportunity to build experience on a server platform that can scale to 12 billion encrypted transactions per day on a single hardware footprint? How about one that can support up to 2 million Docker containers and 1,000 concurrent NoSQL databases? Or the platform that can run the world’s largest MongoDB instance? (1)
What if you tell them that this same server platform is used by 92 percent of the top 100 global banks and over 70 percent of Fortune 500 companies? Or that this widely-used enterprise computing platform represents a potential job market where, “…62 percent of data center organizations recognize that they will have a skills shortage within the next five years.” (2),(3) Do you think you would have their attention yet?
Let’s sweeten the proposition by offering them a networking opportunity with industry professionals who work directly with the technology – a one-day event where they can meet with students from other institutions, professionals with established careers on the platform, and individuals with developer-level expertise in nearly every aspect of the platform. While we’re at it, let’s give them a chance to compete for prizes! What do you have?
You have Student Career Day at SHARE in Providence.
Student Career Day activities at SHARE in Providence, RI, will give students an opportunity to explore these questions and more. On August 8, participating students can compete in an on-site Hackathon, attend educational sessions, receive access to meet exclusively with SHARE technology partners and have an opportunity to connect with industry professionals. Prizes for competitive events include an Oculus Rift, Raspberry Pi, and more! Networking opportunities will give students a chance to connect with industry professionals, peers from other institutions, and several interns who completed the Open Mainframe Project Summer Internship.
As part of Student Career Day, interns from the Open Mainframe Project Summer Intern program will present a panel session. The session is open to both regular SHARE attendees and Student Career Day participants. OMP interns have worked on projects in multiple areas, including OpenStack, Blockchain, Linux Monitoring Tools, and Anomaly Detection Engine for Linux Logs.(4)
