Donald Z. Smith and Robert Pavlat of Travelers

MARCH 4, 2002 - SHARE Inc. today recognized Travelers as the winner of the SHARE 2002 Award for Excellence in Technology. Issued annually, the award recognizes exceptional use of enterprise-class IBM technologies and SHARE resources among SHARE's 2,100-plus member organizations. SHARE President Lillian Cooper presented the award to project team members Robert Pavlat and Donald Z. Smith of Travelers in front of more than 1,700 participants at SHARE in Nashville, taking place today through March 8 at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel.

Hartford, Connecticut-based Travelers was selected for this prestigious award based on its innovative adaptation and implementation of Tivoli Software's NetView Management Console (NMC). Working closely with IBM and Tivoli specialists met through SHARE, Travelers updated an aging network monitoring application, originally developed in-house, with a streamlined NMC application that offers "drag and drop" functionality, improved monitoring options, support for Internet Protocol (IP) and that requires staff support that is considerably less specialized than the company's previous application.

In the nomination submission, Rob Pavlat, Travelers Systems Engineering Director, summarized how he benefited from the experience of implementing NMC at Travelers. "One of the major lessons learned is the importance of having the right information before starting a project of this size and scope", he wrote. "The technical expertise provided by the entire Tivoli team was invaluable." Addressing what role SHARE played in the process, Pavlat wrote, "Participating in SHARE not only gave us access to the right product specialists, but allowed us to capitalize on their wealth of knowledge. Without SHARE, the transition to NMC never would have happened."

"SHARE is extremely pleased to recognize Travelers as this year's recipient of the SHARE Award for Excellence in Technology," offered Lillian Cooper, president of SHARE. "Their success story, enabled through SHARE, reflects many of this organization's greatest strengths, not the least of which is how we serve as a gateway that brings together product developers and front-line enterprise computing practitioners in a productive, non-competitive environment. It also reinforces SHARE's trademark qualities of openness and solution sharing among users, and between service providers and users. We look forward to continuing this tradition as we embark on our forty-eighth year of delivering education, professional networking, and opportunities to influence the IT industry to enterprise computing professionals."

Other finalists for the 2002 SHARE Award for Excellence in Technology included Comerica Bank of Auburn Hills, Michigan, and Sprint of Overland Park, Kansas. SHARE congratulates Travelers, Comerica, Sprint and all the other organizations that submitted nominations for consideration towards this award.
