IBM in Partnership with SHARE Announce 2008 Award for Excellence in Technology, The University of Georgia recognized for its creative reduction in operating expenses

CHICAGO, IL - SHARE Inc., an independent association of IT professionals who utilize enterprise-class IBM technology, announced The University of Georgia as the winner of the 2008 SHARE Award for Excellence in Technology. The university managed to creatively decrease its operating expenses by taking advantage of IBM’s sub-capacity pricing metrics when it upgraded to a 64-bit machine. The project results achieved an overall improvement in performance and productivity, a reduction in software costs and an increased level of customer satisfaction. The impact of the solution for The University of Georgia allowed savings of more than one million dollars since December 2005 and business processes being delivered in record times.

The University of Georgia utilized lessons learned from sessions at SHARE that helped lead to its increased system performance. More specifically, the Workload Manager, a component of z/OS which allows users to define performance goals and assign a business importance to each goal, tuning information gained in several SHARE sessions enabled the university to decrease its TCO and led to further system performance enhancement. It found the knowledge-sharing within sessions helped explain how to best define goals by velocity and response time, and it found that tips and tricks provided ways to handle transactional and batch goals that empowered it to define services to best meet business needs.

“The results achieved by The University of Georgia show how creativity and a thought-out approach for process improvement can save on costs and ultimately increase customer satisfaction. It is impressive to hear the many successes the organization has achieved through its hard work. The university is a well deserved recipient of an award that on a yearly basis offers proof of how SHARE can help develop strategies to improve business,” remarked Martin Timmerman, President of SHARE.

Michael Bliss, Director of System z Technical Support at IBM, stated, “This is great recognition for the University of Georgia and it validates the economic value of the mainframe. More importantly, this award allows the university to do more with less by leveraging the unbeatable performance of System z. At the end of the day, we’re proud to be able to cite how System z is making a difference in the everyday academic pursuits of university students, faculty and staff.”

Since 2001, the SHARE Award for Excellence in Technology has been given annually to a SHARE member company that has demonstrated exceptional use of technology that leverages IBM products or services along with knowledge and professional connections developed through SHARE. SHARE has been an influential association for over 50 years, and receiving this award is considered a highly prestigious achievement.
